A christening cake: what size, which flavour, which design
A christening is a quieter party than a birthday. The close family comes, the godparents, the grandparents, and the cake arrives after lunch when everyone has already eaten. That changes the decisions: less decoration, more attention to the flavour, and enough for everyone to get a slice.
How many portions you actually need
Ten to twenty people is the usual number. Roughly:
- 21 cm, about 10 portions. Close family and the godparents.
- 24 cm, about 15 portions. The most common choice, with a piece left for the next day.
- 27 cm, about 20 portions. A larger family, or a christening combined with another celebration.
- Two tiers, 21 and 14 cm. When the cake needs presence on the table but the guest list is short.
Because the cake comes after the main course, the slices are cut smaller than at a wedding. If you are torn between two sizes, take the bigger one. It gets eaten at home.
Which flavours work after lunch
After a full meal, lighter combinations do better than heavy ones. What people order most for a christening:
- A naked cake with a light whipped cream. Not sweet, and it suits the older guests too.
- Vanilla cream with a vanilla sponge. The classic that children and grandparents both finish.
- Mascarpone with seasonal fruit. The freshest thing on the table after a heavy lunch.
- Red velvet or a carrot sponge. For something less usual that is still gentle.
Belgian chocolate, caramel and pistachio are excellent, just expect people to manage a smaller slice of them after a full meal.
The design that suits a christening
Christening cakes are softer than children's party cakes. Instead of figurines, pastel shades, simple decoration and the child's name with the date. The elements that come up most:
- The name and the date of the christening on the cake itself.
- Delicate flowers, pearls or painted details in a pastel colour.
- A cross, angel wings or another symbol, if the family wants one.
- White or cream as the base, with one detail carrying the colour.
If you are not sure what it should look like, send us a photo you like. Most orders start exactly that way.
Allergies and the youngest guests
A christening usually has more small children and more dietary restrictions around the table than an ordinary party. We bake the cake gluten-free or lactose-free, and we make raw and sugar-free cakes too. If a guest has an allergy, tell us when you order, not at the last minute, so we can plan the whole cake around it.
When to get in touch
Christenings are usually planned a month ahead, which gives the cake plenty of room. We need at least 48 hours' notice, and for a more involved design or a larger cake it is better to write sooner. Weekend dates fill up first, so write to us as soon as you have the date.
Size, flavour and design come together in a few minutes in the online calculator, which lists a christening as its own occasion. We deliver across Bratislava and the towns around it.
Frequently asked questions
What size cake is right for a christening?
For ten to fifteen guests, 21 to 24 cm. Because the cake is served after lunch, the slices are smaller, so 24 cm covers a few more people than the number suggests.
Which flavour suits a christening?
After a main course, lighter creams work best: a light whipped cream, vanilla, or mascarpone with fruit. Belgian chocolate and caramel work too, guests will just take a smaller slice.
Can a christening cake be gluten-free or lactose-free?
Yes, either, for the whole cake. Tell us about allergies when you order so we can plan around them from the start.
How far ahead should I order?
At least 48 hours. For a more involved design or a bigger cake, write as soon as you have the date. Weekend dates fill up first.
