Lactose-free cakes – City Cake Company Bratislava

    Lactose-free cakes

A lactose-free cake replaces every source of lactose, the sugar naturally present in milk, with lactose-free butter, cream and mascarpone, or with plant-based alternatives such as coconut cream and oat milk. You would struggle to tell it apart from the classic version by taste. We have baked cakes to order in Bratislava since 2012 and make the lactose-free ones for weddings, birthdays and family parties. The lactose-free version carries a surcharge on top of the regular price; the calculator shows the exact figure for the size you pick. Please order at least 48 hours ahead.

    What lactose-free means in practice

Lactose is the milk sugar found in milk, butter, cream and cheese. A lactose-free cake contains none of it. Depending on the recipe, we bake with:

    • Lactose-free milk and cream, with the lactose removed enzymatically
    • Plant-based alternatives: coconut cream, oat milk, almond milk
    • Lactose-free butter or margarine
    • Lactose-free curd and cream cheese

    Lactose-free flavours

    • Chocolate sponge with a coconut and chocolate ganache, made without dairy
    • Vanilla cake with an oat and vanilla cream and strawberries
    • Citrus cake with almond cream and lemon zest
    • Lactose-free tiramisu: espresso sponge, coconut mascarpone, cocoa
    • Lactose-free cheesecake on a nut crust
    • Lactose-free red velvet with cream cheese frosting

Any of our cakes, without the lactose

Every cake in our range can be made lactose-free: wedding cakes, birthday cakes, kids' cakes and festive bakes. Say so when you order and we'll adapt the recipe, with the same fondant, the same decoration and the same design as the regular version.

Lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy

The two need different cakes. With lactose intolerance the body lacks the lactase enzyme, so removing the lactose is enough and lactose-free dairy works well. A milk allergy is an immune reaction to milk proteins, casein and whey, so lactose-free dairy is not enough: the cake has to be built entirely on plant-based alternatives. Tell us which one applies to you and we will build the recipe accordingly.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a lactose-free cake and a vegan cake?

A lactose-free cake contains no lactose but may contain eggs, honey or other animal products. A vegan cake, like our raw cakes, contains no animal products at all: no eggs, no butter, no milk.

Do lactose-free cakes come in the same designs?

Yes. A lactose-free cake looks identical to the classic version: the same fondant, the same decoration, the same theme. Nobody at the party will spot the difference.

    Can I order a lactose-free wedding cake?

Yes, they are a regular part of what we bake, and a practical choice when one of the couple or several of the guests have lactose intolerance.

Is a lactose-free cake more expensive?

Slightly. Lactose-free ingredients cost more, so the lactose-free version carries a surcharge on top of the regular price. The calculator shows the exact figure for the size you pick.

Can some tiers be lactose-free and others classic?

Yes, this is a common request for wedding cakes. Every tier can follow a different recipe, and we label each tier clearly so guests know which is which.

I have a milk allergy, not lactose intolerance. Can you bake for me?

Yes, but the recipe changes. With a milk allergy the reaction is to milk proteins, so lactose-free dairy is not enough: we build the cake on plant-based alternatives instead, such as coconut cream and oat or almond milk. Please mention the allergy when you order.
